Laminated Glass, White Glass and Stainless Steel

Veneers re-creates a secure glass dividing wall as a glass color field running intermittently between stainless steel clad columns. Veneers explores alterations of nature as images of endangered woods are resuscitated as scans of pure color and image. Digitally enlarged and colorized wood grains are the source of imagery providing an alternate experience of otherwise widely recognizable natural forms. The particular 29 international species represented are identified by both the IUCN, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flaura and Fauna, as endangered. Veneers, in its way, preserves them.

Light passing through the glass projects the veneers onto the environment and the passerby as stained glass would. The path of travel through the connector is illuminated by progress through the changing color of the veneers imagery. Veneering, the process of overlaying a substructure with decorative surface, is the rich design territory where image intersects with the built environment. Having come also to refer to the astounding beauty of the peeled inner layers of many species of wood, veneering simultaneously suggests both covering up and revealing.

Veneers is a 640 linear foot art wall consisting of 127 Unique Modular Art Units containing 508 pieces of glass. All glass connections are made using chemical bonds, with no mechanical fasteners visible throughout the installation. In place of a typical storefront glass infill, this unitized approach allows for almost seamless bays of image.

The 29 wood species in Veneers are endangered or extinct. They appear here as digitally enhanced ghosts of themselves.
